In a significant move to streamline the GST registration process, the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has introduced a new functionality for Biometric-based Aadhaar Authentication and document verification. This new feature, rolled out in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh, aims to enhance the security and efficiency of the GST registration process. Check out our Guide on Goods and service tax online registration process.
Key Highlights of the New Functionality
Amendment to Rule 8 of CGST Rules, 2017
The amendment allows the common portal to identify applicants using data analysis and risk parameters. This includes Biometric-based Aadhaar Authentication and taking a photograph of the applicant. It also involves verifying the original documents uploaded with the application.
Implementation in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh
GSTN has developed this new functionality. It is now operational in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh as of January 28, 2025.
Document Verification and Appointment Booking
After submitting the application in Form GST REG-01, applicants will receive an email with one of the following links:
- OTP-based Aadhaar Authentication: Applicants can proceed with the existing process.
- Appointment Booking for Biometric Authentication: Applicants must book an appointment to visit a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) for Biometric-based Aadhaar Authentication and document verification.
Appointment Confirmation
Once the appointment is booked, applicants will receive a confirmation email. They must visit the designated GSK as per the chosen schedule. They need to carry the necessary documents, including the appointment confirmation email, jurisdiction details, Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, and original documents uploaded with the application.
Biometric Authentication and Document Verification
The GSK will conduct the biometric authentication and document verification for all required individuals as per the GST application Form REG-01. The system will generate ARNs once the process is completed.
Operational Guidelines
The state administration will provide the operation days and hours of GSKs.
Conclusion
This new functionality is a step forward in ensuring a secure and efficient GST registration process. By leveraging biometric authentication and thorough document verification, GSTN aims to reduce fraud and enhance the integrity of the registration process.
For applicants in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh, this means a more streamlined and secure way to complete their GST registration. Stay informed and ensure you follow the new guidelines to benefit from this enhanced process.
