About Aadhar Card in India
Aadhar card is an identity card containing 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Government of India to the residents of India. Thus, it is based on people’s biometric and demographic data. The unique information is collected by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). UIDAI is a statutory body established in January 2009 by the government.
Aadhaar card is the largest biometric Identification system in the world. Aadhar Card has launched on 28 January 2009 nearly about 10 years ago on 16.03.2019. In India, there are around 1.234 billion cardholders as of July 2018.
Aadhaar Card update deadline
The latest update on Aadhaar cards is that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for free updates of Aadhaar details to December 14, 2024
This extension allows users to update their details such as name, gender, date of birth, address, and mobile number without any charges until the new deadline
How to update aadhar Card details
There are 2 different ways to apply or to update your aadhar card.
First of all you need to visit your nearest Permanent Enrollment centre. You can find the nearest enrollment centre by clicking on “Locate Enrollment Center” on uidai.gov.in portal.
Secondly, you can visit Online using Self Service Update Portal (SSUP) to update your adar card. Click “Update Aadhaar Details (Online)” on uidai.gov.in website and make changes in your details.
Aadhar Card update Online – Step by Step Process
Here’s a step-by-step guide to updating your Aadhaar card online:
Step 1: Visit the Official Website
- Open your web browser and go to the official UIDAI website.
Step 2: Log in to the Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP)
- On the homepage, locate and click on “My Aadhaar”.
- From the dropdown menu, select “Update Your Aadhaar”.
- Click on “Update Demographics Data & Check Status”.
Step 3: Log in with Aadhaar Credentials
- Enter your Aadhaar number or Virtual ID (VID).
- Enter the CAPTCHA code displayed on the screen.
- Click Send OTP to receive a one-time password on your registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP to log in.
Step 4: Select the Details to Update
- After logging in, you’ll see a list of demographic details you can update, such as:
- Name
- Date of Birth
- Address
- Gender
- Mobile Number
- Email ID
- Select the details you wish to update and proceed.
Step 5: Upload Supporting Documents
- Depending on the detail you are updating, you’ll need to upload relevant supporting documents:
- Name: Proof of Identity (e.g., PAN Card, Passport).
- Date of Birth: Birth Certificate or other valid proof.
- Address: Proof of Address (e.g., utility bill, rent agreement).
- Mobile/Email: No document required; update based on OTP verification.
- Scan and upload the document in the acceptable format (JPEG, PDF, etc.).
What to submit?
- Ration card, Voter identity card, Government-issued identity card/ certificate having address, and Indian Passport serve as proof of both identity and address.
- PAN card, Driving license, Secondary or Senior School mark sheet/ School leaving certificate having photograph, Government-issued identity card/ certificate – serve as only proof of identity.
- Electricity/water/gas bill (last 3 months), Bank / Post Office passbook, rent/ lease/ leave & license agreement serve as proof of address only.
Step 6: Review and Submit
- Double-check the details you’ve entered.
- Once verified, click Submit.
Step 7: Pay the Update Fee
- You’ll need to pay a nominal fee of ₹50 for the update request.
- Payment can be made online via debit/credit card, net banking, or UPI.
Step 8: Note the URN for Tracking
- After successful submission, you will receive an Update Request Number (URN).
- Save this number to track the status of your update request.
Step 9: Track Your Update Status
- Return to the UIDAI website and go to “Update Demographics Data & Check Status”.
- Enter your URN and check the progress of your request.
Step 10: Download the Updated Aadhaar
- Once the update is approved, you can download the updated Aadhaar by visiting the “Download Aadhaar” section.
Important Notes
- Ensure your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar for OTP verification.
- The update process typically takes 5-7 working days.
- Always use the official UIDAI website to avoid fraud.

Please take valid Address proof documents with you before going to aadhar center.
Further, you need to take original copies of supporting documents for Aadhaar enrollment and for its update. Later, Enrollment center will scan these documents and hand back to you after the enrollment process.
