IRCTC to Get Flexibility for Upgrading food in Trains

The Ministry of Railways gives IRCTC flexibility to customize the menu of food items served on trains. Thus, the Improved Menu will take care of regional aspirations. Similarly, for prepaid trains in which catering charges are included in the passenger fare, the menu shall be decided by IRCTC within the tariff already notified.

For other Mail/Express trains, a food menu of budget segment items like standard meals shall be decided by IRCTC within the fixed tariff already notified. Thus, the food menu and Tariff of Janta Meals shall remain unchanged. However, the food menu and tariff of such a-la-carte meals will be decided by IRCTC.

About IRCTC food in trains upgradation

To improve catering services on trains, the Ministry of Railways has decided to give flexibility to IRCTC to customize the menu so as to include regional foods/preferences, seasonal delicacies, requirements during festivals, and food preferences of different groups of passengers. Like diabetic food, baby food, millet-based local products with healthy food options, etc. Accordingly, the Competent Authority has approved the following:

For prepaid trains where catering charges are included in the passenger fare, the menu will be fixed at the rate already notified by IRCTC. Apart from this, the sale of a-la-carte meals and branded food items at MRP will also be allowed in these prepaid carts. The menu and rates for such a la carte meals will be decided by IRCTC.

a) For other mail/express trains, the menu of budget section items like standard meals will be fixed in the fixed rate notified in advance by IRCTC. The public dining menu and rates will remain unchanged.

b) Sale of a la carte meals and branded food items at MRP on mail/express trains will be permitted. The menu and rates for such a la carte meals will be decided by IRCTC.

While deciding the menu, IRCTC shall ensure that:

a) Quality and standard of food and service are improved and reduction in quantity and quality, use of inferior brands, etc. to avoid passenger complaints. Security measures are put in place to prevent frequent and inappropriate changes like this.

b) The menu should be compatible with the fare and the menu should be pre-notified for the information of the passengers and the Railways advised before introduction.
