Steps to Deal with Foggy Weather

1. The Indian Railway will use fog devices in locomotives. Thus, it can increase the maximum permissible speed in fog/ adverse weather conditions from 60 kmph to 75 kmph.

2. All locomotives operating in fog-affected areas shall have reliable fog safety equipment available to loco pilots during fog.

3. Placement of detonators and ensuring an adequate supply of detonators. Detonating signals, otherwise known as detonators or fog signals, are devices that are fixed on rails and when an engine passes over them, they explode loudly to attract the driver’s attention.

4. The track must be marked with lime on the sighting board (or on the far signal in the case of double far signals).

5. All signal sighting boards, whistle boards, fog signal posts, and busy level crossing gates prone to accidents should be either painted or fitted with yellow/black bright stripes. Also, repainting work should be completed before the start of the foggy season for proper visibility.

Other Safety Measures

6. Lifting barriers at busy level crossings, where necessary, provided with bright yellow/black signal bars.

7. New existing Seating Cum Luggage Racks (SLRs) are already fitted with LED-based flasher tail lights. Therefore, existing SLRs with fixed red lights should be modified and fixed with LED lights. This will be a very important step to ensure safety in foggy environments.

8. It should be ensured that a retro-reflective strip in a sigma shape is provided as per existing directives to identify the stop signal.

9. Railways affected by fog should review crew changing places. In view of the extended hours on the road. Thus, Indian Railways can build infrastructure to accommodate new/additional crew shifts. Also, Loco/Crew/Rake links will be reviewed during foggy periods.

10. All crew on stationary duty (loco pilot/ assistant loco pilot and guard) should be utilized to work in the train, especially during foggy periods. Similarly, the loco pilots will observe all precautions during fog. In case of fog, when the loco pilot considers in his judgment that visibility is restricted due to fog, he shall run the train at a controllable speed so as to be ready to clear any obstruction. Thus, the speed should in no case exceed 75 kmph.

11. The loco pilot whistles frequently to warn gatemen and road users of approaching trains at level crossings.
