02.12.2022: The Recruitment in Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) will be done through a specially designed exam (IRMS Exam). Thus, the IRMS exams will be conducted by UPSC from the year 2023 onwards. An Indent is being kept for IRMSE (150 nos) on UPSC.

The Ministry of Railways has decided that recruit to the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) from 2023. The ministry of railways has taken this decision in consultation with UPSC and DoPT. the recruitment will be conducted through a specially designed exam (IRMS Exam) to be conducted by UPSC.

Further, the IRMSE will be a two-stage exam- a preliminary screening exam, followed by a main written exam and an interview.

IRMS Types of Papers

In order to check the correct number of candidates for the second stage of the examination, ie, for the IRMS (Main) written examination, all eligible candidates are required to appear in the Civil Services (Preliminary) examination and the eligible candidates will be screened for IRMS (Main) examination.

The IRMS (Main) examination will consist of 4 traditional essay-type papers in the following subjects:

  1. Qualifying Papers

Paper A– One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.            – 300 marks

Paper B –  English                                                                 – 300 marks

  1. Papers to be counted for merit

Optional Subject ‐ Paper 1                                                    – 250 marks

Optional Subject ‐ Paper 2                                                    – 250 marks

  1. Personality Test                                                          – 100 marks

List of optional subjects from which a candidate is to choose only one optional subject

  1. Civil Engineering,
  2. Mechanical Engineering,
  3. Electrical Engineering
  4. Commerce and Accountancy.

The syllabus of the above qualifying paper and optional subjects will be the same as Civil Services Examination (CSE). Thus, the above syllabus will be applicable for the IRMS exams by UPS from 2023 onwards.

Similarly, the general candidates of the Civil Services (Main) Examination and IRMS (Main) Examination can choose any of the above optional subjects for both examinations or can choose separate optional subjects for these examinations (one for CSE (Main) and one for IRMSE (Main) as per the schemes of these two examinations). ).

Further, the language medium and script for the qualifying paper and optional subjects (question paper and answer writing) will be the same as for the CSE (Main) examination.

The age limit and the number of attempts for various categories will be the same as CSE.

IRMS Qualification Requirements for UPSC

  • Degree in Engineering / Degree in Commerce/ Chartered Accountancy, from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or
  • State Legislature in India or
  • other Educational Institutes established by an Act of Parliament or
  • Declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

UPSC is keeping an indent for IRMSE (150 nos) which will have the following numbers out of four options; Civil (30) Mechanical (30) Electrical (60) and Commerce and Accountancy (30).

Result of IRMS by UPSC

UPSC will draw and declare a list of finally recommended candidates from four subjects in order of merit.

The proposed examination scheme envisages the use of the Civil Services (P) examination for screening candidates for the IRMS (Main) examination and further the general qualifying language paper for IRMSE and some optional subject papers of CSE, both the preliminary part and the main written examination. As per UPSC Annual Schedule of Examination 2023, Civil Services (P) Examination – 2023 is scheduled to be notified and conducted on 01.02.2023 and 28.05.2023 respectively. As CSP Exam – 2023 will also be used for screening candidates for IRMS (Main) Exam, IRMS Exam-2023 will be notified as per the same schedule.
